Peripheral artery disease undertreated, understudied in women
American Heart Association Scientific Statement February 15, 2012 Statement Highlights:Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, yet is often unrecognized and untreated in women.Healthcare providers should educate and test women at risk for PAD, which is characterized by narrowing blood vessels, usually in the legs, feet, and arms.Public awareness campaigns such as the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women can be effective in spreading knowledge about PAD.Embargoed for 3pm CT/4pm ET DALLAS, Feb. 15, 2012
